You read article after article about Vastu and feel a tiny pang every time.
"Move your kitchen to the South-East..." "Build your master bedroom in the South-West..." "Place your main door facing the North-East..."
That's all wonderful β if you own your home. But what about the millions of us renting flats in Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Pune, Hyderabad, and beyond? We can't break walls. We can't move kitchens. We can't even hammer a nail without checking with the landlord.
Does that mean Vastu just isn't for us?
Absolutely not.
Here's something most people don't realize: the most powerful Vastu fixes have nothing to do with construction. They're about placement, direction, color, light, and energy β all of which you can completely control inside your rented flat, without a single drilled hole.
In fact, some of the most dramatic Vastu transformations I've seen have happened in rented 1BHKs and 2BHKs, where small intentional shifts changed how the space felt almost overnight.
Here are 10 powerful Vastu fixes any renter can do β most in under an hour, none requiring a hammer, drill, or landlord permission.
1. Fix Your Sleeping Direction Tonight ποΈ

This is the single highest-impact Vastu change you can make as a renter β and it costs nothing.
In Vastu, sleeping with your head pointing North is the most harmful direction β it disturbs sleep, creates restlessness, and affects mood and health over time. The best directions are South (deep rest), East (energy and focus), or West (acceptable).
The fix: Use the compass on your phone. Check which direction your head points when you sleep. If it's North, just rotate the bed. You don't need a new bed, new room, or landlord approval β just move it. (We covered this in depth in our sleeping direction and marriage article.)
This one change has transformed sleep quality for so many renters I've worked with. Start here.
2. Fix the Mirror Facing Your Bed (Or Cover It) πͺ
Many rental flats come with built-in wardrobes that have full-length mirrors on the doors β often facing the bed directly. In Vastu, this is believed to disrupt sleep, amplify restless energy in the bedroom, and create tension in relationships.
The fix: If the wardrobe doors slide, turn the mirrored side inward. If they don't, drape a soft cloth, scarf, or curtain over the mirror at night. Same with dressing-table mirrors β reposition them to face a wall, or cover them when not in use. No permanent change, no damage. (More on this in our bedroom mirror article.)
3. Activate Your North Corner β The Wealth Zone π°

Even in a tiny rented flat, every space has a North corner β and Vastu says this is your wealth zone, ruled by Kubera, the god of wealth.
The problem? In most rentals, this corner ends up being where we dump random things β bags, shoes, broken items, a stack of cardboard boxes from your last move.
The fix:
- Clear it completely. Remove any clutter, dustbins, shoes, or broken items
- Place a healthy green money plant in a blue or green pot in this corner
- Add a small lamp or light source to keep it bright
- Avoid red or aggressive colors in this zone
Even this single corner reset has shifted finances for many renters. (Full walkthrough in our North corner article.)
4. Bring in Wealth-Attracting Plants πΏ

You can't change a flat's structure, but you absolutely can fill it with the right plants. In Vastu, certain plants are considered living magnets for prosperity, peace, and positive energy.
Best plants for renters:
- Money plant β for wealth (place in the South-East)
- Tulsi β for purity, positivity, and protection (North or North-East)
- Jade plant β the "money tree," surprisingly powerful (entrance or South-East)
- Lucky bamboo β for harmony and upward growth
- Areca palm β for clean air and abundance
Avoid cacti and thorny plants indoors β they're believed to create tension and conflict. (Full guide here: 5 plants that attract wealth.)
5. Define Your "Wealth Spot" Without Building Anything πͺ
Don't have a proper locker or safe in your rented flat? No problem. You can still create a Vastu-aligned wealth spot.
The fix: Choose a small drawer, cupboard shelf, or section of a wardrobe on the South side of your room that opens towards the North. Inside, keep:
- Your important cash and valuables
- A small Lakshmi-Kubera coin
- A folded crisp note as a "seed note" (never spend it)
- Keep this area clean, never empty
When you open it, you'll be facing North β the direction of wealth. Every action of taking out or putting in becomes a small ritual of inviting prosperity.
6. Set Up Your Workspace the Vastu Way πΌ
Working from a rented flat? The way your desk is positioned matters more than the size of the flat.
The fix:
- Face North or East while working (North for wealth, East for focus)
- Put a solid wall behind your chair β never a window
- Keep the desk in a clean, decluttered corner
- Don't work from the bed (kills both productivity and sleep)
- Add a small plant on the South-East of your desk
These fixes work even if your "office" is just a corner of your living room. (Full breakdown in our desk direction article and work from home Vastu guide.)
7. Brighten Your Entrance β Without Painting πͺ
Your main door is the "mouth" of your flat β every kind of energy enters through it. Even if you can't paint or change the door, you can absolutely transform the entrance energy.
The fix:
- Keep the entrance immaculately clean β sweep daily
- Make sure the door doesn't squeak (oil the hinges β landlords usually approve such basic maintenance)
- Add a small toran or auspicious symbol above the door (uses Command strips, removes cleanly)
- Place a small healthy plant beside the door
- Add a welcome mat in a warm, light color
- If lighting near the door is dim, plug in a small warm-toned bulb or LED
These small touches change the very first signal anyone (including the universe) gets when entering your flat.
8. Use Colors Through DΓ©cor, Not Paint π¨

Most rentals come with bland white or off-white walls β and you can't (or shouldn't) paint over them. But Vastu doesn't require painted walls; it just requires the right colors in the space.
The fix β bring color in through decor:
- Curtains β choose soft greens, light blues, warm creams, or peach for harmony
- Cushions and throws β add warmth and color easily
- Bedsheets β soft pinks, peaches, and creams for the bedroom; calming for relationships
- Wall art / posters β non-permanent, easy to swap
- Tablecloths and rugs β instant transformation
- Avoid heavy red or dark black as dominant colors β they create tension
You can shift the entire feel of a rented flat through fabric and decor, without ever touching the walls.
9. Fix Broken Things Immediately π§
This is the most underrated Vastu fix on this list β and the easiest for renters to ignore.
That dripping bathroom tap. The flickering tube light. The stopped clock in the hall. The door handle that keeps coming loose. The broken cabinet hinge.
In Vastu, broken and non-functioning items hold stuck, negative energy. They quietly drain your home's energy and your own peace of mind.
The fix:
- Report leaks and major fixes to your landlord β most are required to fix these
- For small things (a stopped clock, a chipped mug, a cracked photo frame), just replace or remove them
- Don't tolerate "good enough" broken-ness because the flat isn't yours
A rental flat without broken things radiates respect and care β and it pays you back. (We talked about this in our house fights article.)
10. Declutter Like You Mean It ποΈ
Renters often accumulate more clutter than homeowners because we move frequently and never fully unpack. There's always a half-open box in the corner, a stack of papers from old leases, things we're "meaning to use someday."
In Vastu, clutter is stagnant energy β and it directly affects your mood, finances, and relationships.
The fix:
- Do a 30-minute declutter sweep every Sunday
- Pay special attention to the North-East corner (sacred zone) and center of the flat (Brahmasthan) β keep these light and open
- Anything you haven't touched in 6 months: donate, sell, or discard
- Keep the area under your bed empty β stagnant energy there ruins sleep
A decluttered rented flat feels twice as big and twice as peaceful. Try it for one week and you'll feel the shift.
A Renter's Vastu Audit Checklist β
A quick weekend audit to catch what's working and what isn't:
- [ ] Is my head pointing North while sleeping?
- [ ] Is there a mirror reflecting my bed?
- [ ] What's in my North corner right now?
- [ ] Are there healthy plants in my flat? Which ones?
- [ ] Is my workspace facing North or East?
- [ ] How clean and bright is my entrance?
- [ ] Are my dominant colors (curtains, cushions) calming or harsh?
- [ ] Are there broken things I've been ignoring?
- [ ] Is the area under my bed empty?
- [ ] Is the center of my flat (Brahmasthan) clutter-free?
Score yourself honestly. Every "no" is an opportunity, not a failure. Fix two or three of them this week and you'll already feel a difference.

A Reminder for Every Renter π«

Here's something I deeply believe: a rented flat is still your home for the time you live there. The walls might belong to someone else, but the energy inside them is yours to shape.
The most powerful Vastu changes don't require ownership. They require intention. The way you arrange your bed, place your plants, treat your entrance, choose your colors, and care for the broken things β all of it shapes your daily life far more than which corner of the house holds the kitchen.
So please don't feel that Vastu "doesn't apply" to you because you're renting. Some of the most beautiful, harmonious, prosperous homes I've visited have been rented 1BHKs in cramped neighborhoods β transformed simply by an owner who took these principles seriously.
Pick three fixes from this list this weekend. Apply them. Watch how your rented flat starts feeling like a home β yours, in every way that matters. πΈ
Are you renting and feeling like Vastu isn't "for you"? Share which of these 10 fixes you're going to try first β and forward this to a friend who's been making excuses about their rented flat. Sometimes the smallest changes inside the same walls transform everything. π
